Whitman is located 30 minutes south of Boston. Originally a small factory town that manufactured shoes and now mainly a residential bedroom community. Whitman hosts an annual Fourth of July Field Day at the park, with a road race, carriage or bike decorating, pie eating contests and other events. The town is primarily a South Shore residential community serviced by the Commuter Rail that has retained its rural character.
